Two of the oldest materials used in constructing a roof are tar and gravel. This type of roof is often found on homes with a low pitch to the roof. At G&W Roofing, our roofers in Ormond Beach, have been repairing and replacing tar and gravel roofing for three decades. A tar and gravel roof is also called a built-up roof. First, there are three to five layers of an asphalt sheet base, tar, and roofing felt. Once this material is laid down, another layer of bitumen covers the bottom layers. This layer is like a very dark tar. The top layer of this roof is typically light-colored gravel. Using a light color helps to reflect the sunlight, keeping your home cooler. The gravel also protects the bottom layers against water damage. Once your new roofing in Flagler Beach, is installed, your home is well protected.
A tar and gravel roof lasts 10 to 20 years with good maintenance. It’s a very affordable material, but it does require a good draining system to prevent water damage. Tar and gravel roofs are traditional. If you have an older home and want to retain its style, this type of roof is a good option.
